THE EFFECT OF EDUCATION ON KNOWLEDGE AND ATTITUDE OF ELEMENTARY STUDENTS IN DENTAL AND ORAL HYGIENE IN THE SCHOOL

Abstract


Background: Dental and oral hygiene are essential to improve the children intake of nutrition, if the intake is disturbed, it will reduce the intake that impact on the health, growth, and development of the children. The caries problem was one of the effect of poor dental and oral hygiene that which was found in many school-age children. The Efforts to overcome this problem were the provision of education about the importance of oral and dental hygiene in schools, the students will gain the knowledge and that knowledge can be applied by the students both at school and at home. Objective: This study aimed to determine the effect of education on knowledge and attitude of elementary school students in the oral and mouth hygiene in schools. Methodology: The research method was quasi experiment. The population in this study was students of SDN Bojong Asih, SDN Leuwi Bandung, SDN Cangkuang Wetan, SDN Pasawahan Dayeuhkolot at grade 4-6. About 291 students were as the sample with a total sample of sampling. Instruments in this study consisted of knowledge and attitude questionnaires. The place of study was in SDN, and it conducted in 2016. The results showed that there was an increasing in the mean of knowledge about 13.32 before the intervention became 13.81 after intervention (p = 0.000). The study also revealed that there was an increasing in the mean of attitude about 24.33 before the intervention became 25.23 after intervention (p = 0.000). Conclusion: There was the influencing of education on the level of knowledge and attitudes of the students in dental and oral hygiene after interventions. Suggestion: There should be an intensive and evaluation program to support the continuity of oral health programs in schools through cooperation between schools and health centers.
